How to Wear the Navy Blue Suit

By Steve

Not everyone knows how to wear a navy blue suit, yet it remains the pinnacle of any man’s business wardrobe. It is the most globally respected and understood suit. It is the first suit you should buy when building your business wardrobe and the first to replace when showing signs of wear. The navy blue suit has a smart and understated elegance that never loses its standing with astute and well-dressed businessmen. It provides a sense of strength and stability for the seasoned businessman. It provides the look of leadership required and expected in the boardroom. It provides the business formality required for meeting clients for dinner after six, and it will provide the hope and confidence to the most recent college graduate interviewing for their first big job.

Advantages – The most notable advantage to a navy blue suit is its solid canvas. This canvas gives you the flexibility to introduce colors and patterns in dress shirts and accessories. Another advantage is the psychological connotation surrounding the color blue. Studies have shown that the color blue is associated with honesty and loyalty. The navy blue suit thus not only impacts your frame of mind but also how others interact with you personally and professionally.

Disadvantages – There are no disadvantages to a navy blue suit if you understand its significance and wear it unapologetically to its greatest advantage. Any attempt to dress down or create a business casual look with a navy blue suit simply shows your lack of style and understanding of the suit. The coat should never be worn as a blazer, and the pants should never be worn as a coordinating trouser with a sport coat. The navy blue suit is not intended to be used like a utility baseball player throughout your wardrobe. There is nothing casual about a navy blue suit. The only disadvantages of a navy blue suit would be found in the way one would carelessly choose to wear it.

Alternative – While I believe there is no substitute for the navy blue suit in business, the only alternative to consider would be the gray solid suit.
